The Power of Imagination

“I have a dream” – said Martin Luther King in his historic public speech when he verbalized his desire to see blacks and whites coexisting as equals and living in harmony. King's speech on August 28, 1963, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement. What lesson do you draw from these famous lines? The power of dreaming or imagination is perhaps the key to achieving something truly big; something that can be the first steps to bring about change. On a far smaller scale, power of imagination is not just restricted to movie makers or creative artists. It affects our day-to-day lives as it affects our health and sense of well being.

The power to dream and imagine helps us to chalk out future possibilities so that we can set our life goals accordingly. Athletes and artists use it to the hilt – when they mentally rehearse a thousand times a performance or a physical feat and prepare accordingly to reach their ambitions. Without the power of imagination you can never create that ‘canvas’ on which to set your goals, ambitions and the means to achieve them. Can you imagine, building a beautiful home, without having dreamt about it before, may be several times before?

In the fields of logical thinking, rationality, mathematics and science, the power of imagination is treated to be a crucial link between a problem and its possible solution. If the theory of relativity revolutionized the way rational thinking can be directed or scientific inquiry can be logically explained, then remember also that Einstein credited his power of imagination for promulgating the formula of E equals MC squared. Such is the power of imagination.

Yet the most misleading and de-motivating part about it is that most of us think this power can be owned by only a select few, little realizing that there is a bit of Einstein in each of us. All it needs is to fuel it with adequate thoughts and actions. Exercise your mind to think wild. Hold no barriers to your imagination. Many thoughts do not make sense but it does not matter. Trigger the child in you. Have you see children at play? They say anything when they build that sandcastle on the beach. Can you emulate them? Daydreaming may be looked down up on by many as a sign of innate laziness. But looking at it in another perspective, it could also give you valuable leads in your daily life.

Random dreaming can be honed down to a disciplined exercise where you harness the power of imagination to your benefit. It can even enhance your power of concentration, lacking in so many of us. For instance, place an apple on the table. Make a mental note of its features, color and any marks. Now close your eyes and think of the apple again. Does the mental image match with the apple on the table? Try doing this exercise again till the mental image of the apple matches exactly with the real apple on the table. You could do this exercise with various other objects. Whatever object you choose, get the real picture and hold the image in your imagination till such times, all the elements of both the images, real and mental match completely. Walk through unfamiliar environment and do this exercise, till you develop the ability of holding in your mind all the imagery of what you are experiencing in real life situations. This ability will gradually enable you to visualize anything, any situation, any place, without even experiencing the same, or without even being there physically. Then expand this skill to other senses like smell, taste, textures and feelings. The more you let your mind sore, the more psychic you can be. The more you let your mind travel, the more imaginative you become.

TRUST:

. The origin of the word ‘psychic’ has its roots in ‘soul’. So whatever is termed as psychic has its root firmly entrenched in soul. Whenever you hear of phrases like ‘gifts of spirit’ remember they are the same as psychic abilities. Yet these psychic abilities, which reside in each of us, are very delicate concepts, which are easily corrupted by greed, selfishness, ego and the like. The fact of the matter is that whatever great abilities or greatness that we are born with, we were not responsible for creating those. On the contrary, they are divine Gifts from the Supreme. He is the one who gave us the talents we possess. Our job is to fine tune it and polish it further so that we can live better lives. You must have heard the phrase repeated many times in your life: God helps those who help themselves. It cannot be truer when it comes to expanding your psychic abilities. The trigger has to come from within. The rest unfolds itself as if by miracle. But the first push has to come from each of us. If life is full of choices, this is the first choice we ought to make. We cannot change anyone else. For that matter, no one can change us too. The only one we can change is ourselves. That is what individual choice is all about. The only person you can change is yourself and the only control you can exercise is on your own feelings, emotions and actions.

Thus your self-improvement exercise begins with yourself and the infallible trust you ought to have on the goodness of the Supreme. Man’s quest for self-knowledge and avenues for self-improvement are truly limitless. We can explore or walk that journey perhaps only half way, in one life time. Praying, meditation, building self-confidence backed by immense trust in your soul which is in unity with the Supreme, will take you a long way in your quest for developing psychic abilities and expanding your mind.
