Learning to Relax
One of the essential pre-requisite for opening your true psychic potential is to
be able to relax. Incidentally, relaxing does not mean going off to sleep. You
can, through proper training and practice, learn to relax fully while being
completely alert in your mind. When you achieve this, you can successfully
unleash your hidden potential to release all the mental energies to be creative,
while remaining inwardly calm. When you are deeply relaxed several changes
happen inside the body. Your heart beats less – from 12 breaths to 6 in an
average person, the constant thought clutter in your brain calms down resulting
in reduction of speed of brain waves, your body uses less oxygen resulting in
lowering of metabolic rate, resulting in tensions and worries gradually
disappearing. In the meantime, your body gets busy with necessary cell repairs
and triggers new growth as it gets rid of all the harmful toxins.
Relaxation also restores balance of mind, helps you unwind and helps you to
become more patient and collected. You cease to be judgmental, critical or even
biased. The mind is relaxed to accept the way things as you reach that peaceful
and neutral state, where possibilities are unlimited. At the end of the day,
your level of self-esteem rises and makes you feel good and purposeful. Here is
a simple and effective method of relaxing:
Sit on a comfortable chair, spine erect, with both feet on the floor and legs in
parallel position to each other.
You do not need a head rest as your head is resting on your shoulders calmly as
if cradled by the spine. Let your shoulders and arms hang loosely. You could
rest your hands on your legs very effortlessly or let them hang loosely. Keep
your eyes closed.
Breathe in as much air is possible to fill up your chest and abdomen. Inhale
this air very slowly and calmly. Every time you inhale tell yourself that all is
well and you are safe and protected. Exhale as slowly as you inhaled. Establish
a breathing pattern. Every time you exhale think that with this breath, all the
tensions, sorrows, disappointments and problems are leaving your body. You are
getting free of all these with every breath that you give out.
Then slowly move your consciousness to each and every area of body. This means
to concentrate on different parts of your body with your mind. Start with your
feet and ankle, when you think that all the muscles in that part are full
relaxed. You are scanning your body with your mind’s eye.
Continue to move your mind’s eye gradually to your lower legs, knees, upper
legs, and hips, continuously sending affirmative thoughts to your mind that each
of these body parts are fully relaxed.
Continue this mental scan to the trunk section of your body, the many organs and
as you carry on, think that all these organs and body parts are at rest and at
peace.
Follow this with your chest, back, shoulders, arms, elbows, wrists, and hands.
As you are moving your mental eye over these areas, you are also becoming aware
of these various body sections.
The neck, head, face and brain are now completely at peace and at rest. Feel
this tranquility and become aware that you are at peace with yourself.
When your physical body is fully relaxed, become aware of a certain spot at the
center of your body, the center of your physical existence. Move your
consciousness to this central spot. Remain connected to this spot and recognize
its presence within you.
This sport is the center of your Being, your place of connection with God, or
the Supreme Being. Once you concentrate on this central spot, you are in oneness
with the Supreme. You are in harmony, in sync with the rest of the universe, in
unison of your creator.
When you feel right that it is time to leave the center you can do that in a
quick count of three when you are back to your world, wide awake and conscious
to face another day with calmness and with a relaxed state of mind. When you
count one, think that you are part of a whole; you are in oneness with the Great
One. With count of two, feel the surge of godly spirit and affirmation flowing
through every vein in your body. Count three and you open your eyes to the
world, happy, content and relaxed.
